We saw swans

On our most recent nature walk we saw around 20 swans on the wet lands near our school. It was a lovely sunny day and we enjoyed observing the birds from a distance.

Happy Halloween 2020

Here are a few photographs from our Halloween dress up day.

INTO Campaign to Reduce Class sizes in Budget 2020

The INTO has launched our Budget 2021 campaign ahead of the budget on 13 October. We are calling on all members to support and share our key priorities to ensure we can keep our schools open.

The pandemic has highlighted the severe lack of funding for primary schools, the need to support school leaders, and in particular the supersized classes (of 30 pupils and more) across many schools which make social distancing practically impossible. We need your help to raise our key Budget 2021 issues with the Minister for Education and across all parties in Leinster House. Our key priorities are:

  • We need to secure a reduction in 2021 in the size of our primary school classes which are, shamefully, the largest in the EU;
  • We must retain supports for teaching principals of one day per week for administrative work, and restart the restoration of assistant principal posts in schools which were cut severely in the last recession; and
  • We must ensure that at a minimum the Covid-19 level of capitation funding (€208 per pupil) is maintained in the 2021 Budget.

We must also take the final steps to end the scandal of pay inequality in teaching, and of payment of the award made to principal teachers more than 10 years ago.

Add your voice to our campaign by emailing your local TD and Senator today and share with peers in your community.

Colourful Garden

Well done to the girls in 5th and 6th Class who painted the garden wall with beautiful colours with the help of their teacher Ms Kelliher. It looks fantastic!

Sarah Webb's Messages for 6th Class

Sarah Webb (Irish Author) put together a youtube video for the 6th Class students of 2020. She invited some of the children’s heroes to make short video messages for them, themed around Dr Seuss’ iconic book, Oh, the Places You’ll Go. Over thirty people answered the call and their messages are shared with you here: Click the Link: Messages for 6th Class

Green School Travel Flag Achievement

Great News this afternoon, We have been awarded the Green Schools Travel Flag. This is a fantastic achievement and it is something that every student should be proud of because you have all taken part in the process! A special congratulations to the fantastic green schools committee members and the green schools co-ordinator Ms Browne. This is our fourth green flag at Scoil Mhuire gan smál. The next theme we will be engaging with for our fifth flag is biodiversity.

This is the email we received: I am delighted to inform you that your application for the renewal of your Green Flag has been successful. The team at Green-Schools were very impressed with your application, congratulations! Please pass on all our thanks to all the hard-working members of your Green-Schools committee, and everyone in the school.

You all deserve a huge amount of credit for your efforts. The work that you are doing is really having a positive impact, and when the work of all schools is combined it’s truly amazing!

Unfortunately, due the current situation, we are not in a position to hold our Green-Schools Awards Ceremonies this year which is such a shame as we absolutely love to celebrate with everyone around the country. As soon as the schools re-open we will ensure you receive your Green Flag and certificate and hope that you can celebrate with a flag raising in your own school when possible.

In the meantime, please keep an eye on our social media channels where we hope you can join us to celebrate online at the end of the month.

Congratulations again on your success. Here are some photographs from the travel flag process which we have been engaging in over the last two years:
